Comedian, Writer & Mother Bron Lewis
Meet Obus Lover Bron Lewis, an acclaimed comedian who has been delighting audiences with her sharp wit and relatable humor. Based in Melbourne, Bron has carved a niche for herself in the Australian comedy scene, earning accolades as a writer at The Project and a regular panellist on the hit show Have You Been Paying Attention?. More recently, she had the honor of opening for Chelsea Handler, further cementing her status as a comedic force to be reckoned with.
We were thrilled to speak with Bron and hear her insights on fashion, comedy, motherhood and all that comes with being a woman in a fast paced male dominated industry.
Q1. Tell us about your journey into comedy. What inspired you to take the plunge and jump up on stage?
A. Comedy is very bloke heavy, and in the open-mic scene, it’s very young bloke heavy. I started as a 30-something year old mother, so my material at the grimy open-mic rooms was hard to get off the ground. I stuck to my guns and eventually found my audience. It’s hard being a mum in comedy - it’s far from a family-friendly job. The more successful you are, the more work you get, and a lot of that work requires travel. When I’m away a lot, I’m not very popular at home, but it has hands down made me a better mum because I’m genuinely happy now.
Q2. How has your journey in the comedy world influenced your sense of style, and/or vice versa?
A. A lot of my comedy is gendered - I delve into my experience as a woman, and as a mother, so I wear clothes that are powerfully female. I never want my clothes or the way I look to be the focus of my performance, but comedy is a wholistic experience, so what the comic is wearing can matter.
Q3. Who are your favourite comedians that influence your comedy and fashion style?
A. Claire Hooper and I have a similar aesthetic on stage, which is handy because we live down the road from each other. It helps that we’re the same size, and both very good sharers.
Q4. What advice do you wish you got when you first started doing stand up?
A. Trust the process, work hard, learn from the crap gigs, stick to your guns, wear what makes you feel like you on stage, and remember the hecklers never ever win.
Q5. Where can we find you on stage next?
A. I am doing my solo show ‘Obviously’ at Comedy Republic’s ‘Replay Festival’ on July 26th, and again at Narre Warren at Bunjil Place on August 17. It’s my best show to date, exploring my journey with post-natal anxiety and depression. You’ll laugh, you’ll sing, you’ll shed a tear. Come along - if for nothing else than for my outfit!
