OBUS X WARLU: THE STORY

OBUS X WARLU: THE STORY

A limited edition collaboration grounded in art, community and connection.

This Summer, OBUS is honoured to collaborate with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned art centre based in the remote desert community of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory.

Warlu is a vital creative and cultural hub for the community. Artists come together to paint, share knowledge and earn an income, continuing practices passed down through generations. The centre supports both established artists and those at the beginning of their creative journeys, offering a space where anyone can come to paint and work.

Our collaboration began with time spent on Country.

After being invited by Warlu to work together, OBUS founder Kylie travelled to Yuendumu to spend several days at the art centre. Rather than arriving with a brief or outcome in mind, the experience was about being present. Assisting artists as they worked. Preparing canvases. Mixing paint. Sharing meals. Listening.

Inspired by time spent at the centre, Kylie selected three artists that she felt a connection with, to be featured across the collection:

Saraeva Napangardi Marshall is a Warlpiri artist from Yuendumu whose work is known for its bold colour, movement and playful iconography. Her paintings draw on cultural stories and everyday observations, translated through a distinctive contemporary style.

Vanetta Nampijinpa Hudson, from Nyirripi, paints stories passed down through her family that relate directly to land, place and cultural knowledge. Her work uses pattern and colour to create layered, rhythmic compositions that feel both grounded and expressive.

Magda Nakamarrra Curtis, also from Nyirripi, is known for her vivid, dynamic paintings that interpret important sites and stories connected to Country. Her work is energetic and immersive, marked by flowing lines and rich colour.

Each artwork was carefully translated into repeat prints, with close attention paid to scale, movement and detail. The integrity of the original paintings was central to every stage of the design process. The resulting pieces are wearable artworks. Designed to be lived in, loved, and worn often. Thoughtful silhouettes, natural fabrics and bold prints come together to honour the artists’ work while remaining true to OBUS’s approach to design.

This collaboration is rooted in relationship and respect. Artwork licensing fees are paid directly to the artists, with additional funds supporting Warlukurlangu Artists and its ongoing role within the community.

Learn more about each artist on the OBUS LOVERS BLOG. Magda, Vanetta and Saraeva share about their practice, inspiration and the story behind their artwork.

We are deeply grateful to the artists and the Warlukurlangu community for welcoming us and for trusting OBUS with their work.
